Currently there are over 25,000 children in the United States with HIV/AIDS. .
The Laurel Foundation's LEAF mentorship program is designed to give youth living with HIV/AIDS the necessary life skills, resources, support, and guidance to build a successful life path.
Mentors provide the guidance needed to mitigate the results of difficult life circumstances like drug experimentation and lower grades in school. Through this guided process, children and youth are able to link their future aspirations with concrete actions today.
Mentoring is a powerful intervention, forming a bond of mutual trust and empathy between mentor and mentee. Mentoring works by enhancing social skills and emotional well being and by the mentor serving as a role model and advocate. In turn, this positively impacts quality of life, attitudes and behavior.
