There are 12 million stateless people living in limbo without citizenship rights.
During civil conflicts or natural disasters, civilians are forced to flee their homes and are stripped of their ability to fend for themselves. When their own country is unwilling to assist or protect them, international agencies like Refugees International (RI) have a duty to step in and fill the gap.
RI assesses the living conditions and urgent needs of internally-displaced persons, asylum seekers, and urban refugees, in order to influence donor policies - particularly those of the U.S. government, the European Union, and UNHCR.
To address the lack of legal protections for internally-displaced people, RI presses national governments to develop and implement their own comprehensive refugee policies, and pushes for the adoption of related international agreements.
